Our collective future depends on our buildings. The world’s people need healthy places to live, learn, and work. The world’s climate and ecological systems need deeply energy efficient buildings to slash carbon pollution. And the world’s markets need these building solutions to be affordable so they can scale. The Passivhaus approach meets these needs and can transform the way we design and build. We need public policy to catalyze this transformation, now.
This group of architects, builders and developers; green building certification organizations; and climate advocates has come together around common cause: how can we promote policies that support rapid market transformation toward Zero Net Carbon building?
Modeled after the Brussels Exemplary Buildings Program, 20 by 2020 aims to support the design and construction in the Seattle region of 20 buildings, 20,000sf or larger, with an Energy Use Intensity of 20 or better.
This innovative transaction structure treats buildings as power plants that produce and sell the negawatts generated by energy efficiency. MEETS clears a major obstacle to deep energy efficiency because it solves the split incentive problem and rewards investors in building efficiency with the full return of ongoing energy savings for at least 20 years.
NK’s leadership team serves on the boards of directors for the North American Passive House Network, Passive House Northwest, and Passive House Western Pennsylvania. We deliver keynote and workshop addresses at industry conferences throughout North America and Europe, and advocate for Passivhaus and zero carbon building policies at the local level, the regional level, and at the United Nations.
Passive House is a transformative notion and we’re going to be leaders showing this can be done, and can be done everywhere.”

Passivhaus design optimizes the light, air, and thermal energy of a building, reducing building energy use by as much as 75%. It’s the world’s most rigorous building energy standard, charting a straight path to zero carbon building. The result is a better way to design and build, with revolutionary performance and predictable results.
